Review of the Triumph Thruxton 900

Just as much as it is a motorcycle in its own right, Triumph’s Thruxton is a time machine. Just admiring a Thruxton from afar will get images of black Brando jackets, oil-spattered leather boots and striving to break ‘The Ton’ flitting through your mind, while actually taking one for a spin gets the nostalgia flowing in a torrent.
The low-set clip-on ‘bars, the gleaming chrome of the bullet headlight and the rasp of the tapered silencers all play their part in sending you back through the decades, when the term ‘Café Racer’ was born on London’s busy city streets, in biker haunts like the Ace Café and the Busy Bee.
Fortunately, although its styling harks back to the days when the British bike industry was king, the Thruxton has its wheels planted firmly in the present.
With an electric start, disc brakes front and rear and modern suspension, this retro street racer gives you all the thrills with none of the heartache – if you’re a true purist, you’ll even have to place your own pool of oil under this one. . .
Launched in 2004 and named after the historic British circuit, the Thruxton is basically a café racer version of the marque’s leading retro classic, the Bonneville, but with tweaked suspension, brakes and steering geometry, clip-on ‘bars, megaphone exhausts, a ’shorty’ front guard and a seat hump, the latter simply a cover that comes off to reveal space for a pillion.
The faithful will scorn the lack of a kick-starter, but a press of the button sees the Thruxton readily fire and quickly settle into a steady, throaty burble, care of the optional factory silencers our test bike came fitted with.
On the road its manner are pure modern-day – its preload adjustable suspension does a good job of smoothing the bumps, its disc brakes haul it down from speed well and it tracks a line through a corner beautifully.
It won’t keep pace with the big multi-cylinders, but its 69 horses are respectable enough, especially when compared with the outputs of the bikes upon which it’s been styled.
Its carburetion is clean, and although redline is an indicated 7500rpm, there’s no need to reach these heady heights – riding its meaty mid-range is the order of the day.
For the nit-pickers, there are still a few Thruxton foibles. Firstly, in an absent-minded moment it’s possible to cook your left knee on the cylinder head, although this isn’t such an issue if you’re wearing leathers.
Secondly, the separate steering lock means it’s possible to ride off with the steering lock on. Just like the old days, granted, but we’ve moved on in this respect for good reason.
Finally, the tank filler cap isn’t lockable. Maybe not such an issue back in the day, but perhaps a little too tempting these days for some light-finger with too much time on their hands, even if their aim is purely to cause annoyance and aggravation. . .
For those with an affinity with café racer-style bikes of the 60’s and 70’s, the Triumph Thruxton 900 offers a truly modern package with the style and edge of yesteryear. It’s a potent combination, and one that I’m sure will keep the café racer ethos alive and well for many years to come.

The Hidden Meanings of European and American Charms

Starting at the inception of the 20th century and extending until the 1960s, it was a mark of the middle-class that young girls be given a charm bracelet before they reached puberty. At every holiday or anniversary, a new charm is added to the bracelet, often by the relative who had given the original bracelet. The demand for charms is ancient; only the method of marketing them is relatively recent. Not all the charms on these bracelets were lucky emblems — equally common were hobby-related and school-related charms. In fact, the number of charms available, and the ordinariness of many of them — a telephone, a car, a cheerleader’s megaphone, a windmill — may have devalued the word “charm” in the English language, so that today it’s often misunderstood that if someone refers to “charms” when that person means “amulets. “ The French, in particular, had a list of charms called “Le Langage de Porte Bonheur” (”The Language of Good Luck Charms”) and included 10 charms that symbolized: An elephant: “Felicite” (happiness) A heart: “Amour” (love) A four-leaf clover: “Bonheur” (luck) A horsehoe magnet: “Argent” (silver — or money, due to the magnet’s “drawing” power) A die, showing seven spots: “Veine” (games of chance; gambler’s luck) The number 13: “Joie” (joy; the usual use of this number is as general luck or gambler’s luck) A pig: “Prosperite” (prosperity) A hamsa hand: “Richesse” (riches; this is not accurate — the hamsa hand protects against the evil eye A horseshoe: “Fidelite” (fidelity; not entirely accurate — the usual meaning is attraction or “drawing”) A pansy: “Souvenir” (remembrance; it belongs more properly to the “language of flowers”) During the 20th century American charm bracelet at left features a variety of lucky charms in a bright mix of brass, copper, sterling silver, and gold-plated metal. This bracelet is typical of the kind of jewelry worn by adolescent girls in the 1950s and 1960s, collected charm by charm while traveling through the tourist traps, flea markets, jewelry stores and yard sales. Many of the more modern American charms symbolize: A silver heart engraved with initials: love for the named individual A brass heart pierced by an arrow: smitten romantic love A silver horseshoe: attraction or “drawing” luck A gold wishbone set with a pearl: wishes come true A silver horseshoe on which is placed a wishbone, a four-leaf clover, a horseshoe and the words “Good Luck”: good luck A gold and green enameled four-leaf clover: luck A silver money bag with a $ sign: wealth A copper horseshoe on which is placed a four-leaf clover: good luck A brass heart padlock: faithful love A silver spread of playing cards: gambling luck A gold double horseshoe set with an artificial diamond: money luck A brass money bag marked 1000: wealth A silver horseshoe: attraction or “drawing” luck Other popular 20th century charms often found on European and American charm bracelets include: A swastika: luck (pre-Nazi Germany) Twin hearts pierced by a single arrow: reciprocated love An Amanita muscaria mushroom: luck A chimney sweep or his ladder and brush: luck A “Lucky Buddha”: luck A black cat: gambling luck And although unrelated to European and American charm bracelets — but probably made to meet Occidental rather than Far East tastes — are, what are know as, Chinese charm bracelets, made with glass beads, jade carvings, and metal amulets strung on black cord and tied around the wrist. Following similar design lines to Chinese charm bracelets, Pandora Jewelry invented a new system for charm bracelets and necklaces, which added a new dimension in collecting jewelry. This unique jewelry line established a foothold in Northern Europe as one of the most successful jewelry businesses to date. Since 2002, Pandora Jewelry has brought hope and opportunity to jewelers across North America. Each item in our collection is a handmade Danish design in sterling silver and 14K gold. How Do MP3 Players Work ?

Recording audio started towards the end of the 19th century with Thomas Edison’s phonograph. This was a machine (that consisted of a tinfoil cylinder and a speaker that resembled the megaphone) that he invented and used to make a recording of Mary Had a Little Lamb, the first song recorded. This moment was crucial in the history of recorded sound. Wax, metal and other materials are shaped into cylinders and disks were used for at least 50 years. In 1929 the vinyl records were made and dominated the scene for the next forty years. Amazingly enough magnetic tape was developed at the same time but it only gained popularity in the 1960s. In 1985, the Compact Disc was developed by Sony and Philips and instantly became a huge success and, 13 years later, the portable MP3 player then made its debut. It was a breakthrough that would change everything; we can now store and listen to a massive amount of music, not just a few songs that use up all the memory of the player. So, in order to be able to store much, we must get the file compressed. This is where the codec software enters the stage; it can convert analogue music to a smaller digital file which is then stored in the memory of the MP3 (the air pressure waves that we hear as sounds bear the name of ‘analogue audio’ when they are recorded). MP3 files can be constructed at higher or lower bit rates, with higher or lower resulting quality. A mid-range bit rate setting of 128 Kbit/s results in a file of about 1/10th the size of the file created from the original source. When we listen to our music, the software that has been embedded in the player reads the file which then decompresses it, converts it to analogue, amplifies the signal and transfers it to the headphones. This, in a nutshell, is how it works. As for the hardware, there is a laser device that reads the CD’s, just as the stylus works for the records and a magnetic head for cassette tapes. The idea no longer looks puzzling now that several types of MP3 players have been created and the future of the system is likely to store even more revolutionary devices of the kind. We will certainly see an increase in a wide range of products but, for the time being, there are only three types of MP3 players available. The smallest, cheapest and probably the most reliable of all are the Flash Players. Their batteries are long lasting due to the fact that they have no moving parts. The capacity of these players has already reached 4GB and will surely increase in the near future. The newest models are about the size of a credit card. Hard Drive Players can have a memory of 80GB so they can hold thousands of tunes, photos and videos. All this on a device that is about the size of a deck of cards. Last but not least, the latest generation of portable CD-players, the CD MP3 players, employ MP3, ATRAC and WMA formats; some of them can even burn CDs, and will hold 10 to 45 hours of music per disc. There are also Minidisk models, a little more expensive than the standard ones

Moose Hunting In Alaska – Alaska Hunting Seasons, Guides And Licenses

Nothing quite rivals the site of a moose in the wild, huge and gangly, head often raised over its forage, strings of vegetation hanging from massive antlers. The moose is the most sought after big game animal in Alaska. Over 7,000 are taken each year from a population of approximately 175,000. Licenses Licenses, big game tags, duck stamps and hunting permits are available from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Wildlife Conservation and are obtainable online. Purchase ahead of time and bring them with you. Licenses are good from the date of purchase through December 31 of the license year. Big game tags are necessary for nonresidents if you plan to hunt brown/grizzly bear, black bear, bison, caribou, deer, elk, goat, moose, bull musk ox, sheep, wolf or wolverine. Seasons Alaska is divided up into 26 Game Management Units (GMUs). Each unit has separate regulations and sets its own hunting seasons. A map of these units and the regulations pertaining to them can be found on the web at http://Wildlife. Alaska. gov. Click on the GMU of interest and a document defining the seasons will open. A complete copy of the Alaska Hunting Regulations can also be downloaded at the ADF&G site. Alaska moose season generally runs from as early as the 1st of September until as late as the 20th of September, depending on the hunting unit. Legal horn size varies between units, but has been for the most part a 50 inch spread or 4 brow tines. Check the regulations of the unit you are interested in hunting for more information. Important Points • Mature bulls can weight over 1500 lbs. A kill can yield 400 to 700 pounds of meat and 65 pounds of antlers to transport from the kill-site. Seasoned hunters recommend never taking a moose more than a mile from your vehicle. • A properly sighted rifle of adequate caliber and a well-placed first shot from a good rest is the best way to avoid having to trail a wounded moose. A rifle capable of shooting a bullet of 150 grains or greater at 2500 fps or more is adequate for moose. A lung shot is the best shot for dropped a moose quickly. • Some moose are migratory; some are permanent residents of an area. Any one area may have several sub-populations with varying migratory habits. • Hunt very early or very late in the day. • Moose have excellent sight and smell. Avoid being visible in silhouette, such as on a ridge. Avoid noisy clothing, such as jeans. Fleece clothing is quieter. Stay downwind. • Successful hunting is knowing where bull moose will be in the fall season. How To Find a Moose Moose are found throughout Alaska, except on the Aleutian Islands. They prefer forested or shrubby habitats and generally avoid the openness of the tundra. They are most commonly found in southeastern or interior Alaska and their density can range from 1 moose per 30 square miles to 5 or more moose per square mile. Their favorite habitats by season are: Summer – commonly seen in open meadows and around water eating aquatic plants and drinking large amounts of water. Fall – Diets change late august to early September to include woody browse of willow, aspen, poplar and birch. Migratory moose move to fall ranges for the rut. Winter – remain in rut areas and feed on low shrubs early winter. Late winter, mountain moose move to valley bottoms and lowland burns where they forage on willows along rivers and creeks. Spring – Diet shifts back to herbaceous plants and leaves. Migratory moose move to calving areas and summer ranges. How To Scout for Moose Scout in summer and hunt legal bulls on the opening day of the season. Scout after the end of the fall season. Bull moose tend to stay near rutting areas for a month or two following the rut. Once you locate a fall concentration area, hunt there the next year as late in the legal season as possible. Find and utilize fall migration routes. Rivers, creeks and low mountain passes are preferred routes. Keep alert for rubbed trees. Early in September, Bull moose begin rubbing the velvet from their antlers. They continue to thrash trees in late September as a sign of dominance. Watch for droppings. Summer droppings resemble cow patties; winter droppings are pelletized. Fall droppings are a combination of the two. Hunting Techniques Stand Hunting and Glassing – Select a panoramic view of a hillside. Don’t scan with binoculars. Pick a spot, search it carefully, then move to a new area. Listen early and late for antler clashes, mating grunts or breaking branches. Floating – Floating down rivers and creek in a canoe is the most pleasant way to hunt for moose. Plus, you have a method of getting the meat back without carrying it on your back. Road and Trail Hunting – Cruising the highways with trucks or four wheelers. Mostly, an unsuccessful and expensive method. Park vehicles and hike in. Calling Moose – The four basic sounds made with megaphones made from birch bark, cardboard or a milk jug. • Antler scraping on trees and shrubs in early September • Pre-rut bull “gluck” in early September • Bull challenge, or “mu-wah” in mid-September • Cow call, a nasal melodic whine, late in September

Moose are among the most sought after animals by those hunting in Alaska and make great trophies. Mark Allen, writer for AlaskaGuideServices. com, helps hunters find the ideal Alaska hunting guides, Alaska hunting regulations and Alaska hunting seasons.

Rescuing Lost Brands

Last month at a Home Depot in Texas, a store manager called a customer a c?well, let?s just say he dropped the 4-letter C-bomb. It?s a nasty word.  How do I know about what happened? Because I read about it on her husband?s blog. He happened to be a witness. He also works in PR, so he had both a personal and professional take on the incident. As the story was recounted later on consumerist. com, I noticed that across the Internet, customers and former Home Depot employees have posted a myriad of ?yeah, I hate Home Depots, too? comments. Doing more research, I realized that the Home Depot brand has problems?a customer service problem, a PR problem, and even an investor relations problem. It wasn?t always this way, as the Home Depot brand was built with an early emphasis on helpful service and its down-to-earth founding executives. So what happened? How did the brand lose its way? I should say this phenomenon is not limited to Home Depot. The recent Wal-Mart/Julie Roehm salaciousness demonstrated how far that brand has strayed from Sam Walton?s original vision. Other companies, like Starbucks, Borders, Nike and The Gap, have been attacked for typifying corporate America imperialism and facelessness despite the fact those companies were founded by passionate individuals in fairly progressive communities. Nor is it limited to massive chain stores or monolithic conglomerates. Ever been disappointed in a restaurant where the food went downhill thanks to a new owner or chef?  Quite a number of companies, and the brands they make, ascribe themselves ?core values. ? While nearly every company promotes those values internally to its own employees, companies that deal with the public like to tout those values as an enticement to do business with them. Sometimes you can read these core values on a company?s website. Sometimes you see them on product packaging. But core values are meaningless unless the actions of the company, the way it conducts business, and the behavior of each of its employees match those values as closely and as often as possible. As advertising professionals, we often have to make sure our work reflects our clients? core values, even if those values are only words on a page. Sometimes, advertising invents those values. Many years ago, I saw some Timberland ads that read like a corporate manifesto, a raison d’ętre. The ads were passionate and well-written. They were also bullshit. I noted to myself that in all likelihood, these ads would run for a few months and then the brand would be on to the next thing. And sure enough, the corporate manifesto advertising and its key message disappeared almost overnight, as if it had never existed. To me, that?s dangerous. The core values of any brand or any company should be solid enough to transcend one ad campaign, not concocted and discarded on a whim. We?re living in a very interesting age?where companies such as big-box stores grow ever bigger because of mergers or consolidation, yet consumers have the power to voice their dissatisfaction via the Internet, reach a worldwide audience, and find like-minded people. Brands and consumers don?t necessarily engage a two-way conversation or dialogue, but both sides now have large megaphones. So it?s up to us to ensure that our clients adhere to their core values in their advertising, marketing, and PR efforts. We know how to detect bullshit since we?re so good at creating it. But beyond that, we?re not helping our clients by promoting their ?great customer service? if that service is notoriously lousy. Whether our clients are small businesses or large multi-store chains, the perils are the same: When a brand loses its way, customers won?t follow. So let?s make the adherence to core values a core value of our industry. And by doing this, hopefully the ad industry won?t lose its way, either. An update from Danny G. : I wrote and posted this column on 12/30/06. 4 days later, the CEO of Home Depot, Bob Nardelli, resigned. Perhaps this brand can be rescued after all.

Stop Selling and Start Engaging – Marketing With Content

Customers want good products and services. They want great service and expert advice. They might even want to know about new businesses opening up or new ways in which existing businesses can help them in their daily lives.
Unfortunately, what customers don’t want is advertising.
Advertising gets in the way of their favourite TV show and clutters up the local newspaper. Still most small businesses continue to spend small fortunes on ads that don’t pull – in print, online, on local TV and on radio.
So if advertising isn’t working for you like you would’ve hoped, what can you do to get the results you want? Answer: you give people what they do want – valuable content.
Content marketing is becoming an increasingly common way for small businesses to market themselves without spending a fortune on advertising. Instead they do it by delivering useful information to customers rather than constant sales pitches. They do it by educating and informing customers with useful resources and helpful guidance – and in doing so they become a trusted resource.
That trust leads to increased enquiries, improved word of mouth and more loyal customers.
When most people think of marketing they might consider an ad in the paper, in the Yellow Pages or possibly even online. You could consider direct mail, radio ads, flyers, trade shows or standing on the street corner with a megaphone.
With limited space in which to say anything useful, your advertising has to be eye-catching, memorable and punchy enough to cut through all the clutter. Unfortunately most ads end up saying more or less the same thing; ‘high quality’, ‘reasonable price’, ‘we’re different’.
Content marketing turns this on its head. Instead of trying to grab people’s attention when they really don’t want to be listening, you create something that they actually want – useful information or entertaining content.
That information accomplishes a few goals. First off it makes people want to see your marketing. In reality people don’t care overly where good content comes from. They have no problem reading a good company blog or picking up a copy of the latest customer magazine.
Getting people to welcome your marketing is the first hurdle – and one that content helps you climb.
Secondly, great content can help you build relationships with customers and prospects. Whether you’re targeting prospective clients or existing customers, good engaging content helps people get to know you and your business better. Particularly for service businesses, content acts as a kind of ‘try before you buy’ experience. Who would you rather do business with; someone you found in the phonebook or someone you’ve been interacting with for months?
On a similar point, informative articles, blog posts and case studies are all great ways to convey your knowledge and understanding of a topic – positioning you as an expert in your industry. Indeed the simple act of committing yourself to print or publishing an article online increases your appeal in itself.
Content also makes you much easier to find, especially online. Google loves fresh, topical content and done well great content will help generate inbound links.
Overall, content helps turn your message from ‘buy from us because we’re great’ to ‘I have some information that’ll help you solve that problem’. Which is exactly the point, helping potential customers and clients solve problems.
In other words, give your current and prospective customers what they want by putting engaging content at the heart of your marketing. That’s something that’ll really make you stand out.

Santa Barbara Bicycle Accident Lawyer’s Top Ten Things You Want to Have on Your Bike if You are About to Have a Bicycle Accident

1. A first aid kit.   2. Cell phone.   3. Christmas tree lights with a battery.   4. A spotlight.   5. A large warning sign that reads, “Do Not Hit Me Or I’ll Sue You. ”   6. A cruise ship horn.   7. A megaphone.   8. Thirty-two inch speakers and a radio.   9. A 360 horsepower engine to get away fast.   10. Our phone number.   Here are ten useful tips of advice from a bicycle accident lawyer to follow if you have been in an accident. You can also learn more about how to handle a bicycle accident in Santa Barbara, or any city, by calling the Law Offices of R. Sebastian Gibson at any of the numbers which can be found on our website at http://www. SebastianGibsonLaw. com  and learning how we can assist you.   Obviously, if you have had an accident, and you are reading all of this advice, it may have been a few hours since the accident. However, if you ever have another accident, or if it’s only been a few hours since you were hurt, here’s what you should do from the start.   First, take a look around and determine if you or anyone, are hurt. If so, taking steps like trying to prevent further injury or loss of blood are the most important thing you can do. Even if some other driver caused you to be injured, it’s just good manners to help the other driver if they are hurt. They may even be so thankful that they admit their fault to you. The worst thing you can do is get angry or start a fight.   Second, make sure everyone is safe from being injured further. If you are in the middle of traffic, and you are dizzy, sit down away from traffic. If your vehicle is a traffic hazard and you have accident warning devices like flares or triangles, put them out on the road to warn other drivers and get away from the car. Let the police an other emergency personnel investigate the scene with the vehicles in place and move them more safely at a later point.   Third, call the police. Accident reports are extremely helpful if the police will do such a report. Let the police know you are injured immediately. Answer the police questions honestly. But if you are dazed or confused, let them know you need medical treatment and answer only what you feel sure about. Remember, your statements can and will be used against you if you admit fault, and it will be too late and too fishy to later say you didn’t know what you were saying at the scene. Police know that your best recollection is immediately after an accident.   Fourth, get the other driver’s information including their names, addresses, driver’s license numbers, make and model of their vehicles, license plate numbers, and their insurance company name and policy number. If there are witnesses, get their names, addresses and telephone numbers as well. If the other driver makes any admissions of fault, write those down as well.   Fifth, if you have a camera on your cell phone or in the car and you aren’t too injured, take some photos of the vehicles and the scene. If you can’t do it right away, do it after you are released from the hospital. Sixth, if you are hurt, obtain medical treatment. Don’t decline the ambulance or hospital examination to save your insurance company money or to be stoic. Take your valuables out of your car if you can and get checked out at the hospital. If you are not hurt, don’t get treatment you don’t need. However, remember, after an accident, you may feel a rush of adrenaline that causes you to only start feeling symptoms of pain a few hours later. If you have a health plan that requires you to obtain permission first, call them and find out where you are allowed to seek treatment.   Seventh, call a good bicycle accident lawyer as soon as you have had your initial treatment, so the attorney can gather other important evidence and prevent the insurance company from taking advantage of you and obtaining such things as recorded statements that you feel fine, when many of your symptoms have yet to manifest themselves. A good bicycle accident lawyer can save you from making a great deal of mistakes and can shoulder much of the hassle of knowing what to do about car repairs, car rentals, medical treatment, witness statements and the like. If you think you will save money by not having an attorney, think again. A good bicycle accident lawyer can almost always obtain much higher settlements, obtain reductions of medical bills and insurance liens and prevent you from making costly mistakes. Also, most bicycle accident attorneys advance costs of obtaining police reports, medical records and the like and are paid and reimbursed for these costs only out of any settlement.   Eight, you will need to report the accident to your insurance company, but since they will want to take a recorded statement from you, just like any other driver’s insurance company, it’s good advice to retain an attorney first. And if the other driver did not have insurance, remember that it is your own insurance company that will be your adversary. You will also need to report the accident to the Department of Motor Vehicles and your lawyer can give you the form for this.   Ninth, do not agree to settle your claim privately with the person at fault for the accident. This almost never works out to your advantage. Don’t agree not to call the police. Police reports that determine the fault for an accident are golden. Your agreement to not involve the police only affords an opportunity for the other driver to change his story and blame you when the police will no longer investigate the accident.   Tenth, don’t pay a traffic ticket without a fight if you weren’t at fault or agree to accept a small payment for your vehicle repairs without knowing that the amount will in fact cover the cost of all the repairs.   If you’ve had a bicycle accident in Santa Barbara, Long Beach, Santa Monica, Ventura, Oxnard, Carson, Torrance, Camarillo, Manhattan Beach, Cambria or San Luis Obispo, or anywhere in Southern California, we have the knowledge and resources to be your Santa Barbara Bicycle Accident Lawyer and your Santa Maria Bicycle Accident Attorney. Twentynine Palms Bicycle Accident Lawyer’s Top Ten Things People Do That Can Help Lower the Risk of a Bicycle Accident

1. Wear neon colored clothes like bicycle racers.   2. Wear reflectors on their backs.   3. Yell through a megaphone whenever a car approaches too closely.   4. Install a flashing light activated by approaching cars.   5. Paint their bikes with reflective paint.   6. Wear neon colored helmets.   7. Don’t use cell phones while riding.   8. Use a motor for fast getaways.   9. Hire a protective van to watch your rear flank.   10. Ride only on streets with bike lanes. Here are ten more useful tips of advice from a bicycle accident lawyer to follow if you have been in an accident. You can also learn more about how to handle a bicycle accident in Twentynine Palms, or any city, by calling the Law Offices of R. Sebastian Gibson at any of the numbers which can be found on our website at http://www. SebastianGibsonLaw. com  and learning how we can assist you.   Obviously, if you have had an accident, and you are reading all of this advice, it’s probably been at least a few days since the accident. However, if it’s only been a few hours or if you ever have another accident, here’s what you should do the next time from the start. If you’ve had a bicycle accident in Twentynine Palms, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Indio, Coachella, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta, Indian Wells, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Thermal, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, or anywhere in Southern California, we have the knowledge and resources to be your Twentynine Palms Bicycle Accident Lawyer and your Yucca Valley Bicycle Accident Attorney.
